BLOG: New Multi-Density Hemp Panel for Efficient and Natural Building Insulation

BIOMATCANAPA by Pedone Working has developed a new multi-density hemp insulation panel, designed for integration within the multipurpose façade system of the residential building located in Margherita di Savoia (Italian demo site). This innovation supports the use of bio-based and carbon-negative materials, fostering the transition towards more sustainable construction practices.

External insulation is a key strategy to improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings. Traditionally, synthetic panels are applied through “thermal coat” systems. However, the shift toward sustainable and healthy construction is driving the adoption of bio-based alternatives.

Within the REHOUSE project, Pedone Working has developed BIOCANAPANEL MULTIDENSITY, an innovative hemp insulation panel for the Multipurpose Façade System at the Margherita di Savoia residential demo site. The product aligns with REHOUSE objectives to promote bio-based, circular, and carbon-negative materials in the building sector.

BIOCANAPANEL MULTIDENSITY features a layered, multi-density structure combining hemp fibre and woody core, providing excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, moisture regulation, mechanical strength, and reduced energy and installation costs. The latter is possible thanks to prefabrication in off-site production, following a specific design that simplifies and speeds up on-site installation. The panel is free of toxic substances, maintains stable indoor temperatures, reduces CO₂ emissions, and improves fire resistance. Its versatility allows use in both drywall systems and façade insulation systems, and it is 100% natural, recyclable, and supportive of biodiversity.

The panel can also be applied in humid or saline environments, protected with breathable finishes. Its high breathability, dimensional stability, and low expansion coefficient prevent mould and condensation, ensuring a healthy and comfortable indoor climate.

Industrial hemp offers additional environmental benefits: 1 hectare produces approximately 12 tonnes of biomass in 3 months, 1 tonne of dry hemp sequesters 325 kg of CO₂, and cultivation requires no herbicides, improving soil quality.

Through REHOUSE, Pedone Working demonstrates the potential of innovative, eco-friendly solutions, supporting EU climate goals, promoting sustainable construction practices, and contributing to reduced energy and operational costs for buildings.
