NEWS: REHOUSE at Empowering Women in Science workshop

On Friday, 20th June, in Bari, the international workshop “Empowering Women in Science: Control Strategies to Close the Diversity and Inclusion Gap” took place. The event was organized by the Politecnico di Bari, under the coordination of Mariagrazia Dotoli and Raffaele Carli, and sponsored by IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control).

Among the invited speakers was Monica Misceo, head of the ENEA Laboratory Good Practices and Projects for Energy Upgrading of Buildings within the Energy Efficiency Unit Department. She presented key experiences aimed at promoting women’s participation in technical and scientific training programs.

Promoting diversity and inclusion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is not only a matter of fairness—it is also a driver of innovation and excellence. However, structural barriers, unconscious bias, and exclusionary practices continue to limit the participation and visibility of women and other underrepresented groups, particularly in leadership roles.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from academia, industry, policymaking, and the non-profit sector to explore critical challenges and share tools, evidence-based strategies, and real-world practices that foster more equitable environments in scientific fields. The event also highlighted the 5 Steps by Engineer model (PCTO – Pathways for Transversal Skills and Guidance), developed within ENEA’s Donne in Classe A project. This model supports high school students in developing skills, gaining new knowledge, and shaping their social and professional identities related to the energy sector, while offering practical tools to overcome gender stereotypes and cultural barriers.

Monica Misceo also spotlighted the European project REHOUSE, focusing on urban experimentation and sustainable regeneration—fields where women can become key players in building innovation, energy efficiency, and inclusive design.

The workshop concluded with a powerful statement:
“Promoting diversity and inclusion in scientific disciplines is not only a matter of equity, but a strategic lever for innovation, quality solutions, and the sustainability of our cities.”
