BLOG: Adaptable Dynamic Building Envelope for Renewable Energy Production and Storage in Greece

The Adaptable Dynamic Building Envelope (ADBE) is a modular system that can be adapted to various geometry topologies both in residentials and non-residential buildings.

The state-of-the-art envelope solutions are facing challenges regarding the high cost and installation times, adaptation to complex building geometries and integration of new sustainable materials. As part of the REHOUSE project RENEL, a Greek SME company that provides innovative, holistic solutions for energy and electromechanical projects and services, is developing the Renovation Package 2 (RP2) in REHOUSE project, an ADBE system that can be tailored to meet specific building requirements while maintaining aesthetic and functional integrity. The whole structure is made of recyclable materials, such as aluminium, which results in reduction of the building’s carbon footprint while the installation time is lower due to high level of prefabrication of its components. Another advancement of the ADBE system is the combination of different technologies into a holistic envelope product, i.e., photovoltaic panels and batteries for renewable energy production and storage respectively, improving sustainability. ADBE prioritizes sustainability by harnessing renewable energy sources to power buildings, reducing the carbon footprint of constructed buildings. Furthermore, the PV panels positioned on the façade’s outer surface are resilient to harsh weather phenomena, making the entire solution resistant to disasters like earthquakes, fires, and extreme conditions.

Within REHOUSE project, RENEL’s solution is actively promoting clean energy transition and embraces a sustainable energy sector which stimulates growth, innovation and job creation to improve quality of life in EU and international community. Therefore, it is in line with the European goals towards climate neutrality, covering key sectors of the economy.
